Introduction by Kathryn Jones.

The death of Queen Victoria in 1901 marked a decisive shift in cultural taste as two successive monarchs and their consorts championed new styles in painting, fashion, jewellery, sculpture and furniture, including Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts. The works acquired by King Edward VII (reigned 1901–10) and Queen Alexandra (1844–1925) and King George V (reigned 1910–36) and Queen Mary (1867–1953) provide an insight into their glittering  social lives, global travels and spectacular royal events as well as  the sobering impact of the First World War and its aftermath.

These monarchs were passionate patrons of the arts, collecting works by great contemporary artists of the period – including  Edward Burne-Jones, Frederic Leighton, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John Singer Sargent – and embracing the new medium of photography both as an art form and to capture the world around them.
