East Wing Limited Edition Windsor Castle Gold Pocket Watch
- Product Code:
- 104778
Description
Windsor Castle Limited Edition of 50.
This pocket watch has been specially commissioned by Buckingham Palace from Mappin & Webb Ltd, London.
The front cover is inspired by the sumptuous silk wallpapers and decorative panels of the Yellow Drawing Room and the Centre Room in the East Wing of Buckingham Palace.
The design highlights some of the original hand-painted birds and flowers from the menagerie of wild and exotic creatures that adorn these spectacular rooms. The engraving with reverse cover shows an intricate engine-turned design, surrounding a central crown, with a complex exposed mechanism and dial is finished with a glistening golden crown.
When timepieces first became small enough to be carried about one’s person, they were known as ‘pocket watches’. At first they were mostly owned by the gentry, who spent a lot of time on horseback. They wanted to take their watches with them, not only to tell the time, but also to impress the rest of the Hunt. Covers were fitted to either side of the watch, to protect the glass and dial during use.
Mappin & Webb have been Royal Warrant Holders since 1897. The company's master craftsman was appointed Crown Jeweller in 2012. A family business, the company was established in 1775, when Jonathan Mappin opened a silver workshop in Sheffield.
This piece is limited edition, and as such, is individually numbered and certificated. Engraved with Windsor Castle and the edition number.
Brass mechanical double cover pocket watch and extra-long 32cm albert chain. Both elements are acid gold plated to 2 microns.
7.2 x 5.2 x 1.8 cm
Caring for your pocket watch
To open the front and rear cover of your watch, push the winder downwards. Take care not to strain the covers, as it will damage the hinges. When closing the covers, depress the winder to avoid damage. Great care must be taken not to overwind the watch, and a full wind will last for about 24 hours. To change the time: Pull the winder gently out to the stop position and turn it to adjust the time.
