This chrome pocket watch has been specially commissioned from Mappin & Webb Ltd, London. The front cover features an engraved Coat of Arms, taken from the heraldic bearings of the coaches in The Royal Mews. The reverse cover shows an intricate engine turned design, surmounted by a crown. Inside, the complex mechanism is exposed and the dial is finished with a glistening crown.
When timepieces first became small enough to be carried about one's person, they were known as 'pocket watches'. At first, they were mostly owned by the gentry, who spent a lot of time on horseback. They wanted to take their watches with them, not only to tell the time, but to also impress the rest of the Hunt. As these watches were very delicate and would be used during travel, covers were fitted to either side of the watch, to protect the glass and dial during use.
