A Prestige piece, limited to one.
The gobelet litron was a popular model at Vincennes and Sèvres throughout the eighteenth century. The cylindrical cup received its name because of its resemblance to the litron, an old wooden cubic measure of slightly larger dimensions, used to quantify salt, grain, flour and peas. The gobelet litron was among the earliest ‘useful wares’ produced at the manufactory. Although the vast majority of gobelets litrons were made to be used, some were intended to serve as eye-catching items for display on chimney pieces and occasional tables. They were the perfect gift and jewelled cups and saucers were just the sort of eye-catching New Year novelty which would have found favour with courtiers at the end-of-year sales held in the private apartments in Versailles.
The original is a Sevres soft-paste porcelain cup and saucer, featuring a beau bleu ground with elaborate gilded decoration incorporating Republican and Masonic emblems. The reserve on the cup is painted with an allegorical female personifying Equality, and the reserve on the saucer with a trophy emblematic of Republican and Masonic virtues.
This faithful reproduction of the original has been made by our skilled craftsmen in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the English potteries. Each Prestige piece has been painstakingly produced entirely by hand using the very finest English Bone China, burnished gold and decorating techniques that remain unchanged for over 250 years. This unique piece is the only one in existence and has been signed by the artist Lee Price, one of the few hand painting artists still working in the industry today resulting in a true work of art and modern day Museum Piece.
