From Bristol Blue Glass, whose products are highly collectible and sought-after, and whose glass makers still make glass the way it was made over 300 years ago.
The origins of Bristol Blue Glass date back to the 1700s, a time of invention. A merchant and potter, Richard Champion, was using the technology of the glass furnaces to develop a recipe for making porcelain. William Cookworthy, with whom he was working, began a search for a good quality cobalt oxide to give a blue glaze to the porcelain. He found this at the Royal Saxon Cobalt Works in Saxony and obtained import rights to Britain for the next 20 years. This cobalt oxide was then introduced to glassware, giving it a deep, rich blue tone.
The Bristol Blue Glass workshop is still based in Bristol in the South West of the UK and each piece is blown by hand from start to finish without the use of any moulds. This style of glass making was in practice from Roman times up until the industrial revolution when glass making became automated. Every piece is hand signed with 'Bristol' giving it provenance for future collectors.
