Dutch Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen

Christopher White’s catalogue covers Dutch works from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries in the Royal Collection, which holds one of the finest assemblages of such Dutch paintings in the world. Based on the catalogue that was first published to critical acclaim in 1982, this new edition has been produced to meet demand for a revised and updated version of the seminal work, and it includes more than 300 colour illustrations integrated with the text for the first time.

The introductory essay charts the history of Dutch picture collecting by British monarchs, drawing particular attention to the prolific patronage of Charles I and George IV. Their acquisitions formed the foundation of an exceptionally rich collection of the best in Dutch art, including works by Rembrandt and his followers, Dou and Maes, portraits by Frans Hals and Honthorst, genre pictures by Ter Borch, De Hooch, Metsu, Adriaen and Isack van Ostade, Steen and Vermeer, and landscapes by Cuyp, Jacob van Ruisdael, Hobbema, Adriaen van de Velde and the Dutch Italianates.

Since the 1982 edition was published many of the works have been cleaned and restored and several, including some ‘Rembrandt’ works, have been reattributed. The catalogue entries are accompanied by updated technical notes and new conservation photography, including X-rays and infrared reflectography, revealing important new information about the artist’s intentions and techniques. This revised edition thus contains much new information that enables us to appreciate better this far-ranging collection and Dutch art in general.
