Arms and Armour in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen: European Armour

Description

The Royal Collection holds one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world. This catalogue raisonné is the first since 1904 to cover significant elements of this substantial and important collection in comprehensive detail.

The catalogue includes more than 250 pieces of European armour, comprising complete armours, individual pieces, shields, horse armour and spurs, many of which were commissioned or collected by the royal family over a period of 500 years.

More than 500 colour images are used to illustrate the collection, including intricate decorative details and makers’ marks. Introductory essays cover the provenance of the collection and the ways in which arms and armour were displayed in the royal palaces from the sixteenth century up to the present day.

Among the many outstanding examples of the armourer’s craft, the catalogue includes such internationally significant pieces as the spectacular sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Greenwich garnitures made for Henry VIII, Sir Christopher Hatton and Henry, Prince of Wales. Reconstruction drawings that include lost pieces for these remarkable garnitures have been especially commissioned for the catalogue to accompany the detailed photography of surviving pieces.
